Cradle of hope talk

The cradle of hope's slogan is BE THE DIFFERENCE. This NPO dedicates itself to empower the less fortunate, the jobless and the uneducated to help and guide them to lead a meaningful and dignified life.
My talk was very humbling and I had to dig deep to express my feelings. I'm not going to lie, insecurity hit me hard just before I had to talk, what can I possibly say to make things better? They are destitute and without hope, but then I remembered my own story. I remembered words that I once read: "We teach what we have to learn the most ourselves" So I told my own story.

I grew up not far from where the charity's home is. It's a poor area, I had a single mother who did her best to raise me to her best abilities, but there was always this cloud hanging over us called poverty. It's not that you choose it, it's just something that happens (a series of unfortunate events) and if you are raised in such an environment, when your parent are always struggling to stay ahead, you start to doubt your own self worth. It's in the little moments, you know... when your mom can't afford new school clothes or you see how the other children have better toys, and you hear your mom cry at night in her room. This is where it all starts, and only later in my life could I go down on my knees and say thanks to God for giving me the mother he did, who never gave up, and did her utmost to give the best she could. All I could say to these women, was to never give up, no matter how broken and bruised they feel. That I, who was scared too at times, could pick myself up out of crazy moments of unfortunate events and become a woman who helped others to see their value. That I found a life purpose, out of chaos and crisis and that I believe in my heart, so can they.

I'm assisting these women with positive image sessions and just helping them to feel good about themselves again. We're going to need old clothes, makeup,  and any female toiletry items.
